Some of you already know who I am, but for those who don’t my name is Nelson Liem. I founded a company called eXmerce 13 years ago helping small business owners leverage barter as an alternative marketing tool to find new customers, save cash, and turn excess capacity/inventory into profit. Today, we represent 400+ businesses in the Calgary area.
2017 marks our 13th year in business and we are proud to represent the business community here in Calgary providing B2B bartering services for local businesses. Recently, we’ve been nominated by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce for the People’s Choice Award for Small Business Week upcoming. We are in good company with other local businesses. Currently, we rank #8 out of 42 businesses, and we are the only B2B business in the top 10. Voting ends August 31. For us to WIN, we need your vote and over the next 9 days I will share with you my entrepreneurial journey, and tell you what your vote would mean to us.
2004 marked the birth of eXmerce. I’ve always had a passion in starting a business of my own and chasing the entrepreneurial dream, however, fear in the past had always prevented me from getting started as an entrepreneur. I had the fear of failing; the fear of not knowing what I was doing; the fear of not being able to pay my bills; the fear of cold calls; the fear of the unknown. All this fear stemmed from one thing – removing myself from my comfort zone. I was always comfortable where I was at in life. It was only until my 10 year relationship ended that it completely rocked me. I felt like I hit rock bottom at 27. I’ve realized whether in business or in personal life, you can never get comfortable. When you get comfortable you stop growing as an individual or even as partners in a relationship. Comfort starts to create fear because you begin to experience less and only do what you know. It was at the moment when my 10 year relationship ended, I decided to fully engage myself in being an entrepreneur to find myself again; to take chances; to experience life again and that meant becoming an entrepreneur.
Now, how this ties into the award and wanting your vote. Well, I believe there’s always a story behind every entrepreneurs reason for starting out. As entrepreneurs, we have to encourage and mentor others to overcome this fear and get out of the comfort zone. If an idea has been residing in your heart, go and pursue it because you never want to live your life with regrets. A vote from you would allow for us to continue to inspire others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, as we continue to build our barter community for small businesses in Calgary.
